Oven: 180°C / 160°C Fan / Gas Mark 4
Approximate Cooking Time: As an initial planning guide for an unstuffed whole turkey, allow approximately 20 minutes per kg plus 70 minutes. Actual cooking times may vary considerably, particularly for traditionally reared birds.
Approximate Cooking Times by Weight
-
5kg Turkey: Approximately 2 hours 50 minutes.
-
6kg Turkey: Approximately 3 hours 10 minutes.
-
7kg Turkey: Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.
-
8kg Turkey: Approximately 3 hours 50 minutes.
-
9kg Turkey: Approximately 4 hours 10 minutes.
-
10kg Turkey: Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes.
These are provisional planning estimates rather than guaranteed cooking times. Always follow the cooking guidance supplied with your turkey and use a meat thermometer to confirm that it is thoroughly cooked.
How to Roast Your Turkey
-
Preheat your oven to 180°C / 160°C Fan / Gas Mark 4.
-
Remove the turkey from its packaging and remove the giblets from the cavity. Keep the giblets refrigerated until you're ready to prepare your gravy.
-
Place the turkey breast-side up in a suitable roasting tray.
-
Brush the skin with melted butter or oil and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
-
Cover loosely with foil to help retain moisture and prevent excessive browning.
-
Roast according to the cooking guidance supplied with your bird, basting occasionally if desired.
-
Remove the foil towards the end of cooking to allow the skin to become beautifully golden.
-
Check the thickest parts of the breast and thigh, avoiding contact with bone. Ensure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 75°C.
-
Remove from the oven, cover loosely with foil and allow to rest for 30–45 minutes before carving.
Butcher's Tip: A generous resting period helps the natural juices settle throughout the meat, giving you beautifully tender and succulent slices.
Making the Most of Your Turkey Giblets
Your Free Range Bronze Turkey is supplied with giblets, which can be used to make a wonderful traditional Christmas gravy.
Place the giblets (excluding the liver, if preferred) in a saucepan with onion, carrot, celery, herbs and water. Simmer gently to create a flavoursome stock, ensuring the giblets are thoroughly cooked.
Strain the stock and combine with the roasting juices from your turkey to create a rich, delicious homemade gravy.
Important Cooking Information
All cooking times are approximate and based on cooking from chilled.
Whole turkey cooking times can vary depending on the size, shape and characteristics of the bird, as well as individual oven performance.
Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the thickest parts of the breast and thigh reach 75°C before serving.
Follow the use-by date, storage information and any specific cooking instructions supplied with your turkey.
Serving Suggestions
Serve your beautifully roasted Free Range Bronze Turkey with golden roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rich homemade gravy, cranberry sauce and generous helpings of traditional festive stuffing and pigs in blankets.
For a truly traditional Christmas table, add honey-roasted parsnips, buttery Brussels sprouts and Yorkshire puddings.
Use the included giblets to make a wonderfully rich turkey gravy, adding even more flavour to your festive feast.
And don't forget Boxing Day! Leftover turkey makes delicious sandwiches, cold platters, homemade festive pies, hearty winter soups and warming curries.
Refrigerate leftovers promptly and use within 48 hours, or freeze for later enjoyment.
